Bhubaneshwar – In a thrilling final match of the Intercontinental Cup, India emerged triumphant with a 2-0 win over Lebanon, securing their second title in the tournament. The Indian team, led by Skipper Sunil Chherti, showcased their prowess on the field, with Chherti himself contributing a crucial goal to the team’s victory.
India’s first triumph in the Intercontinental Cup came in the inaugural edition in 2018, and they continued their success by clinching the championship once again. The 2019 title was secured by Korea, making India’s recent victory all the more significant.
The title clash between India and Lebanon was filled with excitement and anticipation. Chherti demonstrated his exceptional skills when he found the back of the net in the 46th minute, propelling India into the lead. Lallianzuala Chhangtethen, the provider of the first goal, further solidified India’s position with a goal in the 66th minute and after he won the Hero of the match award.
Throughout the match, India displayed their dominance, maintaining control over the ball for nearly 58% of the game. Lebanon made valiant efforts, with seven shots on target, but the Indian defense stood strong, denying their opponents any chance to level the score. However, India’s performance in the opponent’s final third seemed to lack creativity and ideas, leaving room for improvement.
Skipper Sunil Chherti’s contribution to the team cannot be understated. With his goal in the final, Chherti added another remarkable achievement to his illustrious career, becoming the third-highest goal scorer among active players in international football. He now stands alongside the likes of Portuguese ace Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi of Argentina, with an impressive tally of 87 goals in 137 appearances.
