Rotterdam, Netherlands – In a thrilling final that had fans on the edge of their seats, Spain emerged victorious by defeating Croatia 5-4 on penalties after a goalless draw in regular and extra time. This win not only secured Spain’s first-ever UEFA Nations League title but also marked their first major trophy since their triumph in Euro 2012.
The match remained deadlocked at 0-0 after the conclusion of 90 minutes, and the tension continued to mount during extra time as both teams sought a breakthrough. However, neither side could find the back of the net, leading the game to be decided by a nerve-wracking penalty shootout.
It was substitute Dani Carvajal who ultimately sealed the victory for Spain with the winning penalty kick. Throughout the match, both teams showcased tremendous resilience and determination, but it was Spain who maintained their composure when it mattered most.
Croatia, the 2018 FIFA World Cup finalists and third-place finishers in the recent World Cup held in Qatar, were vying for their first major international trophy. Led by their veteran star player Luka Modric, the Croatian team put up a valiant effort during the 120 minutes of play. However, substitute Lovro Majer and Bruno Petkovic saw their penalties saved by Spain’s goalkeeper Unai Simon, adding to the heartbreak for the Croatian players and fans.
In terms of possession, Spain dominated the game, holding more than 50% of the ball, while Croatia managed to maintain possession for only 48% of the match. Despite their lower possession, Croatia targeted five shots on goal from seven attempts, while Spain only managed one shot on target out of their 10 attempts.
The penalty shootout was filled with drama and intensity. Joselu equalized for Spain after Nicola Vlasic had initially put Croatia in the lead. Goals from Marcelo Brozovic and Rodri made it 2-2, with Modric and Mikel Merino successfully converting their penalties. Lovro Majer missed his shot, but Marco Asensio scored to give Spain a 4-3 advantage.
Croatia’s Ivan Perisic scored to level the score line once again, but Aymeric Laporte failed to convert for Spain, setting up a final chance for both teams. Bruno Petkovic missed his opportunity, and it was Dani Carvajal’s successful spot-kick that secured the victory for Spain, clinching the UEFA Nations League title.
