Birmingham: Both Australia and England have faced penalties and point deductions for their slow run-rate during the first Ashes Test. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has fined both teams 40% of their match fees and docked those two points each in the ICC World Test Championship.
According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, teams are penalized for maintaining a slow over-rate. For every over a team fails to bowl in the allotted time, players are fined 20% of their match fee. Additionally, Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions states that teams will have one point deducted for each over short.
As a result, Australia and England have been penalized with a 40% match fee deduction and a loss of two World Test Championship points. The captains of both teams, Pat Cummings and Ben Stokes, accepted the charges and the proposed sanctions. This led to the avoidance of formal hearings, demonstrating their acknowledgment of the offense.
The charges were leveled by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Marais Erasmus, with support from third umpire Chris Gaffaney and fourth umpire Mike Burns.
