New Delhi: Hockey India has announced the appointment of former Indian captain Tushar Khandker as the new coach of the Junior Women’s Hockey Team. Khandker’s arrival brings a significant boost to the team as they gear up for the upcoming FIH Women’s Junior Hockey World Cup 2023 in Santiago, Chile, scheduled to take place from November 29 to December 10.
Having previously served as a coach for the Indian Men’s Team between 2014 and 2016, Khandker brings a wealth of experience and a string of notable achievements to his new role. He played a pivotal role in guiding the team to a historic silver medal at the Champions Trophy 2016 in London, a Gold Medal at the Asian Champions Trophy, and a bronze medal at the World Hockey League 2015 in Raipur, among other accomplishments. Khandker also served as part of the coaching staff during the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
In his recent position as Chief Coach Janneke Schopman’s deputy for the women’s side, Khandker contributed to the team’s preparation for the Asian Champions Trophy 2021 in South Korea. Additionally, he played a crucial role in their participation in the Asian Cup in Oman in 2022, where the team secured the Bronze Medal and qualified for the World Cup. He was also a part of the support staff for the Women’s Team during their inaugural FIH Pro League 2021-22 season.
Throughout his career, Khandker has continually honed his coaching skills and pursued further education in the field. He recently completed the FIH Level 1 course and has also engaged in Hockey India’s Coaches Education Pathway, completing the Basic, Level 1, and Level 2 certifications.
With his vast experience and expertise, Khandker’s appointment instills confidence in the Junior Women’s Hockey Team as they set their sights on the FIH Women’s Junior Hockey World Cup 2023. Under his guidance, the team aims to showcase their skills on the global stage and compete against the best junior teams from around the world.
