Bengaluru: In an intense Group A encounter, Nepal emerged victorious with a late goal, defeating Pakistan 1-0 in the SAFF Championship 2023 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Tuesday. While Nepal finished their campaign with three points from three matches, Pakistan, unfortunately, returned home without a point in their kitty. India and Kuwait have already secured their spots in the semifinals from this group.
Both teams displayed a spirited performance throughout the match, showcasing some excellent football skills. In the 31st minute, Nepal had an opportunity to take the lead when Syed Abdullah Shah committed a foul on Bimal Gharti Magar near the dangerous area, resulting in a yellow card for Shah. However, the ensuing free-kick taken by Bimal soared over the crossbar, failing to capitalize on the chance.
On the other end, Pakistan came close to scoring in the 30th minute when Muhammad Umar Hayat set up Alamgir Ali Khan Ghazi near the edge of the box. Unfortunately, Khan’s shot went straight into the hands of Nepal goalkeeper Kiran Kumar Limbu, denying Pakistan the opening goal.
Just before halftime, Nepal had the best chance of the first half, orchestrating a brilliant attacking move. Ayush Ghalan found himself in a favorable position but was unable to convert as his shot was blocked by Pakistan goalkeeper Yousuf Ijaz Butt.
After the break, Nepal continued to dominate in the attacking third, consistently pressuring the Pakistani defense. In the 60th minute, they created another opportunity when Nawayug Shrestha delivered a perfectly weighted pass to Manish Dangi. However, Dangi was thwarted by the Pakistan custodian in a one-on-one situation.
Nepal maintained their attacking momentum, pushing forward from both flanks and forcing the Pakistani defenders to defend deep. Finally, in the 80th minute, Vincenzo Alberto Annese’s side reaped the rewards of their relentless efforts. Laken Limbu set up substitute Aashish Choudhary just outside the box, and Choudhary found the back of the net, beating the goalkeeper at the near post to give Nepal a crucial 1-0 lead.
In additional time, Laken Limbu had the opportunity to seal the game for Nepal, but his weak shot was saved by Yousuf Ijaz Butt, preventing further damage for Pakistan.
