New Delhi: Indian Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra showcased his remarkable comeback by claiming gold medal at the Lausanne Diamond League 2023, earning praise from Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur. Thakur also commended long jump athlete Sreeshankar for his performance in the event.

Taking to Twitter, Thakur congratulated Sreeshankar for his impressive 5th place finish in the men’s long jump event at the Lausanne Diamond League. He acknowledged Sreeshankar’s best leap of 7.88m and highlighted his talent and determination. Thakur encouraged him to continue shining and blazing new trails.

Neeraj Chopra, who was making a comeback from an injury that forced him to miss some competitions after his victory at the Diamond League event in Doha, proved his dominance once again. In his fifth attempt, Neeraj unleashed a massive throw of 87.66m, securing him the top position in the Men’s Javelin Throw event at Lausanne Diamond League.

Thakur hailed Neeraj’s remarkable comeback after recovering from a muscle injury and praised his phenomenal effort as a beneficiary of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). Thakur expressed his confidence that Neeraj’s stellar performance is just the beginning of many more proud moments to come.

Neeraj’s performance in Lausanne showcased his determination and resilience. Although his first attempt was invalid, he achieved distances of 83.52m on his second attempt and 85.02m on the third. His fourth attempt was invalid, but it was on his fifth attempt that Neeraj’s “golden arm” unleashed a spectacular throw of 87.66m. In his final attempt, he achieved a distance of 84.15m.

Meanwhile, Sreeshankar displayed his skills in the long jump event, finishing in the fifth position with a best jump of 7.88m. Sreeshankar began with a decent jump of 7.75m, followed by a result of 7.63m on his second attempt. However, in his third attempt, he made a significant improvement, leaping to 7.88m. Despite his efforts, Sreeshankar’s jumps of 7.59m and 7.66m in the fourth and fifth attempts respectively were not enough to secure a top-three spot.
