Telangana: Hyderabad witnessed a day of exceptional performances as several swimmers shattered national records on the second day of the National Swimming Championship. Among the standout athletes was Olympian Maana Patel, who set a new national record in the women’s 100-metre backstroke event. Lineysha AK also made her mark by establishing a new record in the women’s 200-metre breaststroke event. Additionally, Nina Venkatesh made headlines by breaking her own national record not once but twice in the women’s 50-metre butterfly.

The National Swimming Championship, now in its 76th edition, kicked off on Sunday in Hyderabad and will continue until July 5. The competition features both men’s and women’s events in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and individual medley. Exciting races are also scheduled for freestyle, medley, and mixed team relays.

Adding to the significance of the event, the National Swimming Championship has been officially recognised as a qualifying event for the Paris 2024 Olympics by World Aquatics. Indian swimmers will have their final opportunity to qualify for the Asian Games 2023, which will be held in Hangzhou, China, later this year.

The qualifying period for individual swimming events at the Paris 2024 Olympics began in March and will conclude on June 23, 2024. With the national championship serving as a platform for swimmers to showcase their talent and achieve qualifying standards, the stakes are high as athletes aim to secure their spots for the prestigious global event.
