New Delhi: Indian badminton ace PV Sindhu continues to slide down the rankings, as she dropped three more places to world No. 15 in the latest women’s singles standings released by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on Tuesday. The two-time Olympic medalist and former world No. 2 has experienced a significant dip in her ranking since the beginning of the year, falling out of the top 10 in April.
PV Sindhu, who started the 2023 season as world No. 7, has struggled for form since returning to action after a lengthy injury layoff following her gold medal win at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. The 27-year-old shuttler suffered first-round exits at the Malaysian Open and Indian Open earlier this year, failing to progress beyond the second round in the majority of the seven other BWF World Tour tournaments she has participated in.
This drop to world No. 15 marks the first time Sindhu has been outside the top 14 in the women’s singles rankings since April 2013. Her career-best ranking of world No. 2 was achieved in April 2017. Despite her recent challenges, Sindhu remains a formidable player and has the potential to reclaim her spot among the elite in women’s badminton.
In the women’s singles category, Saina Nehwal, another Olympic medalist, maintains her position at world No. 30. Aakarshi Kashyap, Ashmita Chaliha, and Malvika Bansod follow at No. 42, No. 44, and No. 46, respectively.
In men’s singles, HS Prannoy retains his status as India’s top-ranked player, holding on to world No. 8. Kidambi Srikanth, a former world No. 1, currently sits at No. 20, just behind Commonwealth Games 2022 men’s singles champion Lakshya Sen, who occupies the 19th spot.
The men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty maintained their impressive world No. 3 ranking, while the women’s doubles pairing of Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly slipped down one spot to No. 17.
Rohan Kapoor and N Sikki Reddy are the highest-ranked Indian pair in mixed doubles, positioned at world No. 33.
As PV Sindhu and her compatriots strive to regain their form and climb back up the rankings, fans eagerly await their next performances on the badminton court.
