Mumbai: Indian Super League (ISL) champions Mumbai City FC have completed the signing of Spanish defender Jose Luis Espinosa Arroyo, popularly known as Tiri. The 31-year-old centre-back has agreed to a one-year contract with the Islanders, which will keep him in the sky-blue jersey until the conclusion of the 2023–24 season.

Born in Los Barrios, Spain, Tiri began his professional career with the ‘B’ team of Caizd from 2009 to 2012, even making two appearances for the club’s first team in 2010. In 2012, he moved to Atletico Madrid, where he became an integral part of their ‘B’ side, featuring in 85 matches between 2012 and 2015.

In 2015, Tiri ventured into the Indian Super League, joining Atletico de Kolkata (now ATK). He played a crucial role in the ATK squad that reached the semi-finals during his debut season. After a brief stint with Atletico Madrid’s ‘B’ team, he returned to ATK for the 2016 season, establishing himself as one of the league’s most reliable defenders and helping the team clinch the ISL trophy.

Following his successful spell with ATK, Tiri moved back to Spain in 2017 to play for Marbella FC in the third division. However, he made his way back to the Indian Super League, this time signing with Jamshedpur FC ahead of the 2017–18 season. Tiri’s solid performances led to him playing every minute of the campaign for Jamshedpur FC, narrowly missing out on the playoffs in the team’s inaugural season.

After spending three years with Jamshedpur FC, tallying 49 appearances and three goals, Tiri made a move to Mohun Bagan Super Giant in 2020. He quickly became an integral part of the Mariners’ defence, playing a crucial role in both the ISL and their AFC Cup campaign. Unfortunately, Tiri suffered an injury prior to the 2022–23 season, sidelining him from league action until his return in the 2023 Super Cup.

With an impressive record of 110 league appearances spanning eight years, Tiri stands as one of the most experienced and accomplished foreign players in the history of the Indian Super League. His arrival at Mumbai City FC comes as the team prepares to defend their league title and embark on a significant 2023–24 AFC Champions League campaign.

Expressing his enthusiasm about joining the club, Tiri stated, “I’m glad to be here and join Mumbai City FC. The culture at this club is highly spoken of across the league, and the ambitions here are for everyone to see. I have played in India for a long time, but I want to continue winning, and I’m looking forward to defending the league title and winning trophies with Mumbai City FC. It’s a new chapter for me and one that I’m very excited to get started with.”
