Amsterdam – Former Manchester United and Netherlands goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after suffering from bleeding around his brain, as confirmed by his former club, Ajax, on Friday. The 52-year-old football icon is currently in stable condition at the hospital.
During his illustrious career at Manchester United, Van der Sar achieved numerous accolades, including winning the Premier League four times during his six-year stint from 2005 to 2011. He made a total of 186 appearances for the club and played a pivotal role in securing the UEFA Champions League title in 2008. Additionally, Van der Sar helped Manchester United clinch the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup and the League Cup.
Prior to his successful tenure at Manchester United, Van der Sar represented Ajax from 1990 to 1999, making 266 appearances for the Dutch club. He played a vital role in their triumph in the UEFA Champions League. Following his time at Ajax, Van der Sar joined Juventus, where he made 66 appearances before eventually signing with Fulham in 2001.
Upon retiring from professional football in 2011, Van der Sar returned to Ajax and assumed the role of chief executive, which he held until the conclusion of the previous season. Unfortunately, Ajax experienced a disappointing campaign, finishing third in the Eredivisie, the top football competition in the Netherlands. The club missed out on a UEFA Champions League spot, prompting Van der Sar to announce his departure from his executive position.
Van der Sar retired from football after a memorable stint, which culminated in a defeat to Barcelona in the 2011 Champions League final. Throughout his career, he represented the Netherlands in 130 matches, making him one of the most-capped players in Dutch football history.
