New Delhi: In a rare and noteworthy feat, Indian cricketer Virat Kohli is set to equal the legendary Sachin Tendulkar with another unique record when India takes on the West Indies in their first Test match on Wednesday. Kohli will become only the second Indian player to face a father-son duo in Test cricket away from home.
The West Indies squad includes opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul, son of the renowned West Indies batting great Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Kohli had previously faced Shivnarine Chanderpaul during India’s 2011 tour of the West Indies. Now, with Tagenarine Chanderpaul’s inclusion in the West Indies team, Kohli will have the rare opportunity to face both father and son in Test matches.
The only other Indian cricketer to achieve this feat is Sachin Tendulkar himself. Tendulkar faced Geoff Marsh in Australia during his debut tour in 1992 and later played against his son Shaun Marsh during India’s tour of Australia in 2011–12. This intriguing parallel marks the beginning and end of Tendulkar’s Test career, as the 2011–12 tour was his final Test series away from home.
For Kohli, who has often expressed his admiration for Tendulkar and credits him as his inspiration to play cricket, this achievement holds special significance. The young cricketer has managed to accumulate extraordinary statistics throughout his career and has even surpassed several records set by his idol.
The upcoming Test match against the West Indies will not only provide an opportunity for Kohli to equal Tendulkar’s unique record but also allow him to showcase his exceptional skills against a promising young talent like Tagenarine Chanderpaul. The 22-year-old Chanderpaul has made a solid start to his Test career, with 453 runs in six matches at an impressive average of 45.30, including one century and one half-century.
