Islamabad: Classes at Karachi University have been suspended for the 10th consecutive day as the teachers’ strike intensified due to non-payment of salaries, as reported by The News International. The teachers have been on strike for 10 days to protest against the non-payment of salary arrears that have been pending for one and a half years.
The Karachi University Teachers’ Society had earlier announced a complete strike this month. Additionally, Faizan-ul-Hassan Naqvi, Secretary of the Karachi University Teachers’ Society, pointed out that the salary increment announced in the budget four months ago has not yet been disbursed to permanent teachers.
Academic and research activities at the university have ground to a halt due to the lack of funds. Part-time teachers have not received their dues for the past one-and-a-half years, and permanent faculty members are still waiting for the promised increment. Naqvi clarified that the payment for a lecture to visiting faculty has been reduced from 600 rupees to 480 rupees.
Furthermore, the government has been unable to provide basic facilities in the university. Naqvi expressed his frustration, emphasizing that the state of academia is dire, and mismanagement within the administration is evident. As problems in the public sector continue to mount, students are increasingly turning to private universities, as reported by Geo News.
