Nine dead, many injured after bus falls into gorge in Ooty

Chennai : Nine people were killed, and many were injured when a bus fell 50 feet into a gorge in Ooty Coonoor. The passengers on board were natives of Tenkashi. The accident occurred on the 9th hairpin bend near Marapalam on the Coonoor-Mettupalayam road. Immediately, the police and locals initiated a rescue operation.

Several people were admitted to Coonoor hospital with injuries. There were 60 people on the bus, who were returning from Ooty. The condition of three people is very serious, and the death toll may increase, according to an ANI report.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased. Stalin also announced that Rs 1 lakh would be provided as financial assistance to those seriously injured in the incident, while Rs 50,000 would be provided to those who received minimum injuries.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief over the incident and announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the families of those who died in the accident. “Pained by the loss of lives due to a bus accident near Coonoor in Nilgiris district, Tamil Nadu. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. I pray that the injured recover soon. An ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. Those injured would be given Rs. 50,000,” PM Modi wrote.”
