Kochi: The High Court has issued a directive against collecting funds for the Punyam Poonkavanam project, which is currently being conducted under the leadership of the police at Sabarimala. The High Court has instructed the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) to investigate the operation of the Punyam Poonkavanam project and submit a preliminary report. The division bench has ordered that funds should not be raised in the name of the Punyam Poonkavanam and Pavithram Sabarimala projects, which are implemented by the Devaswom Board, and both the police and the Devaswom Board are responsible for ensuring compliance.
The petition is currently under consideration by a division bench, consisting of Justice Anil. K. Narendran and Justice Sophy Thomas. Previously, in Erumeli, a civil police officer was suspended for allegedly collecting illegal funds in connection with the Punyam Poonkavanam project. This High Court order was voluntarily issued based on a report provided by the Sabarimala Special Commissioner.
The Punyam Poonkavanam project was initiated in 2011 under police leadership with the objective of maintaining cleanliness in areas like Sannidhanam, Pampa, and Nilakkal. In the last season, the Devaswom Board introduced the sacred Sabarimala project, which aimed to maintain cleanliness in and around Sabarimala.
