Rameswaram: A remarkable achievement was made as an autistic teenager successfully swam from Sri Lanka to Dhanushkodi, defying strong currents. Harish (17), the son of Bharatmohan and Nirmala and a native of Chennai, demonstrated extraordinary determination.
Despite being born with autism and a speech impediment, Harish had a deep passion for swimming. Recognizing his interest, his parents provided him with swimming training with the assistance of coaches in Chennai.
On October 6, Harish, accompanied by his father and 24 fellow swimmers, departed from Rameswaram by boat en route to Sri Lanka. Harish commenced his swim in the Sri Lankan sea at 11:30 that night and successfully reached Dhanushkodi’s Arichalmunai beach at 11:30 the following morning. His parents proudly reported that he covered the 28 km distance in just 12 hours and 30 minutes.
This remarkable feat comes after a previous record set by another autistic teenager who swam from Talaimannar settlement in Sri Lanka to Dhanushkodi in Tamil Nadu in 13 hours. Jia Rai, a thirteen-year-old and the daughter of a naval officer, achieved this remarkable accomplishment.
