Thiruvananthapuram Metro Rail Project: DPR submission set for January

Thiruvananthapuram: The long-discussed Thiruvananthapuram Metro project is inching closer to become a reality. Reports indicate that a medium metro project, modelled after the Kochi Metro, is working for Thiruvananthapuram. The Cochin Metro Rail Corporation (KMRL) has enlisted the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this ambitious endeavour.

With KMRL overseeing the implementation of the Thiruvananthapuram Metro project, it is expected that the DPR will be submitted to the government for approval in January. Construction will commence once both the state and central governments give their green light to the project.
The concept of the Thiruvananthapuram Metro Rail project was first conceived in 2012, and by 2014, DMRC had submitted the initial outline for the project. The initial study suggested that the project could be executed in two phases: from Pallippuram to Kaimanam in the first phase and from Kaimanam to Neyyattinkara in the second phase, with an estimated cost of Rs 4,219 crore. KMRL had assigned a Delhi-based Urban Mass Transit Company (UMTC) for later studies.

Later, the project’s management was handed over to the Kochi Metro Rail Corporation. Last July, KMRL presented a comprehensive transport plan for Thiruvananthapuram, laying the groundwork for the metro project. However, the specific type of metro system to be implemented in Thiruvananthapuram was not specified at that time.

Following an alternative transport analysis study, it was determined that a medium metro, similar to the Kochi Metro, would be the most suitable for Thiruvananthapuram.
