New Delhi: The Supreme Court has granted permission to prosecute Arundhati Roy and Kashmir University professor Sheikh Showkat Hussain for their alleged anti-India speeches. They stand accused of delivering these speeches during a seminar in Delhi in 2010, with the theme ‘Azadi – The Only Way.’ The complaint was filed by Kashmiri Pandit Sushil Pandit and Roots Kashmir, an organization of Kashmiri Pandits.
They are facing charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 153A (promoting enmity between different groups), 153B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration), 505 (acts prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony), 124 (sedition), and 196(1) (hate speech). The case originally included Kashmiri separatists Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Syed Abdul Geelani, but they were removed from the case after both passed away.
Arundhati Roy has a history of taking anti-national stances, including her opposition to India’s 1998 nuclear tests, which established the country as a nuclear power.
