Hanoi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday inaugurated a distinguished bust of the Nobel Laureate writer-poet, Rabindranath Tagore, in Bac Ninh city, Vietnam. He said that, Bharat and Vietnam share profound historical connections dating back almost 2,000 years which are rooted in Buddhism.
Expressing his heartfelt gratitude to the leadership of Bac Ninh province, located to the east of Hanoi, Jaishankar underscored the region’s vital support for the installation of Tagore’s bust.
“India and Vietnam have profound historical connections dating back almost 2000 years, which are rooted in the legacy of Buddhism. Bac Ninh Province is also a part of this ancient tradition. Historical records validate Indian monks played a significant role in introducing Buddhism to Vietnam,” he said.
Jaishankar expressed his delight in the widespread recognition, readership, and appreciation of Tagore’s works throughout Vietnam, even finding their place in Vietnamese textbooks. He further noted that Vietnam had honored the legacy of Tagore by issuing a commemorative postage stamp in his name back in 1982.
Jaishankar’s visit to Vietnam commenced on Sunday, and he is set to continue his diplomatic mission with a visit to Singapore from October 19 to 20
