Thiruvananthapuram: The education department has introduced a significant change by extending the age limit for higher secondary guest teachers. The department issued an official order, now raising the age limit from 40 to 56, offering a greater opportunity for experienced teachers. Previously, the upper age limit for general-category teachers in higher secondary schools was set at 40 years.
The Director of Public Education’s report emphasized the unavailability of teachers within the age limit specified by special rules. The revised age limit seeks to ensure the smooth continuation of education for higher secondary students, preventing any disruption in their studies.
Previously, there were complaints regarding regional deputy directors who rejected appointment orders for guest teachers exceeding the age of 40. Under the previous regulations, the age limits were 43 years for OBC (Other Backward Classes) and 45 years for SC (Scheduled Caste) and ST (Scheduled Tribe) categories. This policy had prompted complaints from qualified candidates who have obtained the necessary qualifications, including a B.Ed., but are unable to engage in teaching for a long period.
