Thrissur: The Kerala High Court has issued a ban on wearing footwear within the Vadakkumnathan Temple premises during the Thrissur Pooram festival. This directive was issued by the Devaswom Bench. Last year, numerous attendees of the Pooram were observed wearing footwear as they entered the temple premises. Additionally, the High Court emphasized the importance of adhering to the temple rituals for all visitors. Further, the Court has given instructions to maintain cleanliness at the Vadakkumnathan Temple Grounds.
Last year during the Pooram festival, there were complaints about food scraps and plastic waste being discarded at the Thekke Gopura Nada of the temple. Additionally, Thrissur resident K. Narayanankutty lodged a complaint about untoward incidents occurring at the Vadakkumnathan temple, leading the High Court to take suo motu cognizance of the case.
The Devaswom Board told the court that there has been an incident of throwing food waste including meat food and all the waste is being removed. Devaswom officials do not distribute food inside the temple. The Board informed the High Court that plastic containers and bottles were not kept inside the temple walls and that the allegation that there was a liquor party inside the temple walls all day long was false.
A bench comprising Justices Anil K Narendran and G Girish said that the Cochin Devaswom Board should ensure that temple ceremonies and pujas are conducted in accordance with temple customs and traditions.
