Tamil Nadu: Six Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested on Friday by Sri Lankan Navy personnel after they allegedly went astray on to the island nation’s waters, as reported by a Fisheries department official.
The fishermen from Nambuthalai in Ramanathapuram district, who had put out to the sea in a country boat on Thursday, were detained near Nedhuntheevu for crossing into the Lankan waters, Deputy Director of Fisheries E Kathavarayan said. The Sri Lankan Navy captured the fishermen for fishing in the Sri Lankan territorial waters.
The Sri Lankan Navy personnel registered cases against them and took them to Kankesanthurai, added Kathavarayan.
One Indian fishing trawler was also taken into custody.
“The fishing trawler and the arrested fishermen were brought to the Kankesanthurai Harbour to be handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries, Jaffna for onward action,” the navy said.
