Thimphu: King of Bhutan conferred on Friday Prime Minister Narendra Modi the Order of the Druk Gyalpo, the highest honour of the Himalayan country. As per ranking and precedence established, the Order of the Druk Gyalpo was instituted as the decoration for lifetime achievement and is the pinnacle of the honour system in Bhutan, taking precedence over all orders, decorations and medals.
The award was presented after a meeting with King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck in the capital, Thimphu. Prior to this, only four individuals had been honored by Bhutan with the Order of the Druk Gyalpo.
This marks PM Modi’s third visit to Bhutan since assuming office in 2014. Bhutan announced that the award was given to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in recognition of his crucial role in promoting Bharat-Bhutan relations and his distinguished service to Bhutan and its people. Upon receiving the award, Narendra Modi dedicated the recognition to the 1.4 billion Indians.
During Bhutan’s 114th National Day celebrations on December 17, 2021, King Jigme Khesar Namgyel announced the country’s highest civilian award for PM Narendra Modi.
