New Delhi: Wrestler Babita Phogat and her father Mahavir Phogat joined BJP on Monday in the presence of senior party leaders.

Babita is the sister of India’s first gold medalist in wrestling at the Commonwealth Games, Geeta Phogat, and the daughter of wrestler and Dronacharya Award recipient Mahavir Singh Phogat.

Babita has been tweeting and endorsing BJPs policies and vision of its leaders in the recent past. Recently, she came out in support of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who had stoked controversy with his “lighter remark” on Kashmiri girls.

Babita hailed the leadership of Modi and said, ” Since many years I have been a big fan of Narendra Modi. I was into sports hence couldn’t get associated with the party then. But now after they have scrapped Article 370 and made history that will be written in golden letters, I am very delighted to join this party.”

The induction of the Phogats into BJP comes ahead of the assembly poll in Haryana, slated to be held later this year.

The film “Dangal” loosely based on the story of her and her sister which released on 23 December 2016. Babita was portrayed by Sanya Malhotra and her younger self by Suhani Bhatnagar.
