Mumbai: In an attempt to achieve eco-friendly environment, the Western Railway for the first time has installed a PET (polythylene terephthalate) bottle crushing machine in Mumbai Rajdhani Express.
The super fast express train of Rajdhani class runs between Mumbai Central and New Delhi.
The Indian Railways took this initiative to support Swachch Bharat and Go Green missions and ties in with the ban of single-use plastic imposed by the Centre.
This particular machine can crush up to 3000 bottles per day and can recycle 90 per cent PET waste bottles at the source. It will also help to reduce carbon footprints by 100 per cent recycling and avoid littering in landfill from bottle waste.
According to the Plastic Waste Management Rules (2016) amendment, manufacturers, suppliers and sellers of plastic across the country have to clear out plastic made products within two years.
