Mumbai: Election Commission has decided to conduct biennial election for the 9 vacant seats of the MLC by MLAs in the state of Maharashtra on May 21. Nine seats of MLC by MLAs became vacant on 24 April in Maharashtra.
The Commission in its order has set May 4 as the date for issue of notification for the elections, while May 11 is the last date for filing nominations. It has fixed May 14 as the last date for withdrawal of candidature with polls scheduled to take place on May 21 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
The Commission had received a letter dated April 30 from Governor BS Koshyari indicating the feasibility of conducting elections in the State. In this connection, Governor had also mentioned that Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on 28th November, 2019 and pointed out that as per constitutional provisions he has to become a member of either the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly or Legislative Council within a period of six months i.e. on or before the 27th May, 2020.
Sanjay Raut, senior Shiv Sena leader, tweeted to thank the poll panel for its decision to hold the elections.
“The Election Commission of India (ECI) has allowed elections to the Legislative Council (MLC) in Maharashtra. I hope… the uncertainty that was created it will end now. I am grateful to the central government and the Election Commission of the country. Satyameva Jayate!” Raut tweeted in Hindi.
