Thiruvananthapuram: In the Vadakkancherry Life Mission project, Swapna Suresh, accused in the gold smuggling case and the top brass of the consulate received a commission of Rs 3 crore 60 lakh from the construction company, informed Enforcement Directorate (ED).
By allocating funds for the project, ED said that a top brass of the UAE Consulate and an Egyptian citizen in the consulate also received the commission.
The project aims to build flats for those who lost their household during floods worth Rs 18 crore. Out of it Rs 3,60,000 which means 20 per cent were given as commission to Swapna Suresh and high officials of the Consulate.
Enforcement also received information that Swapna had received Rs 70 lakh in 2019 from the company which had awarded the contract for visa stamping at the consulate. The commission for Swapna was a thousand dollar when a kilogram of gold was smuggled. In addition to this, she had obtained another $1000 for a kilogram of gold under the guise of giving it to the top officials of the consulate.
A Memorandum of Understanding between Life Mission and Red Crescent was handed over to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday.
