Delhi: National Green Tribunal has asked the German car making company Volkswagen to pay a sum of Rs.100 crores by 5 pm on Friday. The air pollution in Delhi caused by excess nitrogen oxide emissions resulted in imposing major fine on Volkswagen company.
If the company fails to deposit the amount, the car makers will have to face punitive action including arrest.
Nitrogen oxide is a smog forming pollutant that causes cardiac and respiratory illness. A detailed report on the pollution states that Volkswagen cars emit around 48.678 tonnes of Nitrogen oxide in Delhi in the year 2016.
The tribunal has ordered to pay Rs. 171 crores as fine, Rs.100 crores to be paid within 48 hours as the first phase.
