The West Bengal government has decided to upgrade the security of former BCCI president and Indian team captain Sourav Ganguly. The security was upgraded from the Y category to the Z category. The decision was taken as the previous security detail’s tenure expired on May 16, 2023.
A senior official said that after Ganguly’s security cover expired, they conducted a review as per protocol, and it was decided to raise his security to the Z category.
As per the new security detail, Ganguly will get 8 to 10 police officers for his protection. Earlier in the Y category, he only received three policemen from the Special Branch inside his cordon, and three others would guard his Behala residence.
After stepping down as BCCI President, Ganguly is currently the director of the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL. Once the IPL season ends on May 21 and returns to Kolkata, Ganguly will receive Z-category security protection.
When he stepped down as BCCI president, Ganguly was also offered the position of IPL director after stepping down, but it was rejected by him. He was also the mentor of the Delhi Daredevils before becoming BCCI President.
In West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Governor C V Ananda Bose, and Trinamool Congress MP and national secretary Abhishek Banerjee have Z Plus protection, while ministers such as Firhad Hakim and Moloy Ghatak have Z security.
