Shimla: Union Minister for Earth sciences, Kiren Rijiju pointed out the need to expand and enhance the research activities in the Himalayan regions of India. He also batted for scientific approach to life and said that the scientific community will guide us in the coming years.
During his visit to the National Center for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Goa, he stressed the fact that Himalayas belong to India and there is little activity happening in the mountain range.“ We are yet to get the position where we deserve to be, so the Himalayas is another very-very interesting area. The geographical features of the Himalayas resemble ocean beds, all the sand, stones and everything” Rijiju said. Additionally he said that he has seen changes in the Himalayas during his own life time.
The minster also expressed his opinion about the transformative powers of science and the need of rational approach to addressing challenges. “Scientists are the one who will guide as on how we should progress, how the nation must look forward and how our lifestyle should be,” he said. He emphasised the importance of creating awareness for the work carried out by scientists and urged for increase in public engagement and appreciation of scientific endeavours. He added that NCPOR is making significant progress in the field of ocean research and helping India to reach a unique position.
