New Delhi: In a significant move to promote healthy and hygienic food options, the central government has planned to establish food streets nationwide. The government aims to set up 100 food streets across various states in the initial phase of the project. The project is being implemented in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and with technical support from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

Under this scheme, each food street will receive a substantial grant of Rs. 100 crore. 100 such food streets will be opened in 100 districts across the country. The funding for the project will be sourced from the National Health Mission, with the ratio of financial assistance ranging from 60:40 to 90:10. The responsibility of implementing the scheme and providing the necessary infrastructure lies with the state-level municipal corporations, development authorities, and district collectors. The branding of these food streets will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines set by the FSSAI.

To support the food street scheme, several key provisions will be made. Financial assistance will be provided for branding activities, an exclusive cart, safe drinking water, hand sanitising, toilet facilities, tiled floors in public areas, a proper waste disposal system, and adequate lighting. The central government recognises the significant contribution of street food vendors to the Indian food economy.

At the same time, due to rapid urbanisation, the number of such eateries has increased a lot. To address the concerns related to food safety and cleanliness, the government has taken the proactive step of establishing food streets. This initiative aims to enhance the hygiene standards of local food businesses and boost local employment, tourism, and the economy.
