Gujarat’s coastal regions have been severely impacted by Cyclone Biparjoy, resulting in the injuries of at least 23 individuals and the loss of 24 animal lives, according to the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Prior to the cyclone’s landfall on Thursday, two individuals had already lost their lives.
The very severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy has now weakened into a severe cyclonic storm and is predicted to weaken further by noon. As per the Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD) forecast, cyclone Biparjoy will weaken into a deep depression over South Rajasthan by this evening. The current wind speed is 85–95 kilometres per hour (kmph), which will reduce further in the next few hours.
The storm made landfall at the Gujarat coast 10 km north of Jakhau Port around 10:30–11:30 pm last night with a wind speed of 115–125 kmph gusting to 135 kmph.
Light to moderate rainfall is predicted in most areas of Gujarat today, and heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in low-lying coastal districts like Kutch, Banaskantha, Patan, and Dwarka. Heavy rainfall warnings and wind warnings have been given to the districts of Gujarat.
The landfall of the Kutch coast caused extensive damage to low-lying districts as they experienced rough sea conditions, high-speed winds, and heavy rainfalls. The gusty winds brought down over 524 trees and electric poles in various parts of Gujarat, causing power outages in around 940 villages. Road clearance work is underway in several districts to restore transportation, remove blocking, and fix other damages.
