Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam continues to be dire, with nearly 4.89 lakh individuals affected across 16 districts. In the last 24 hours, one person drowned in flood waters in Nalbari district, taking the death toll to two.
According to the flood report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), nearly 2.67 lakh people have been affected in Balaji district alone and 90,575 in the Sarupeta revenue circle. The flood waters have submerged 10782.80 hectares of cropland.
Following the torrential rains, the water level of the Brahmaputra River has risen above the danger level mark at Neamatighat in Jorhat district. Additionally, other rivers, such as the Manas River at NH Road Crossing, the Pagladiya River at NH Road Crossing, and the Puthimari River at NH Road Crossing, are also flowing dangerously high.
To provide relief and assistance, the district administration has established 140 relief camps and 75 relief distribution centres in the affected districts. Currently, around 35,142 individuals have sought shelter in these camps. The ASDMA flood report further reveals that approximately 427,474 domestic animals have been affected by the floods.
Rescue operations are underway in various flood-affected districts, with the involvement of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire and Emergency Services, and Civil Defence personnel.
