Gandhinagar: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen held a meeting in Gandhinagar during the third G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBGs) meeting, hosted under the Indian G20 Presidency.
During their discussion, they emphasised the importance of bolstering multilateral development banks and capitalising on the opportunities presented by crypto assets. Sitharaman highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent state visit to the United States and his meeting with the US President, which further strengthened the US-India partnership, enhancing its vigour and dynamism.
“The historic visit paved the way for new avenues for collaboration, propelling our partnership to a greater height,” Sitharaman said.
Addressing the press conference, Sitharaman emphasised the mutual commitment of India and the United States to actively promote the G20 agenda. This includes addressing crucial global issues such as reinforcing multilateral development banks, coordinating climate action, reaching consensus on challenges related to the increasing debt burden of low and middle-income countries, and harnessing the potential of crypto assets and digital public infrastructure to promote financial inclusion.
She further emphasised that India and the United States share democratic values, pluralism, and a strong dedication to a rules-based global order and multilateralism. Both countries are actively engaged in constructive dialogue to achieve common objectives.
The third G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBGs) meeting, held in Gandhinagar, is taking place over two days. Nirmala Sitharaman and the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Shaktikanta Das, are jointly presiding over the meeting.
