New Delhi: Smriti Irani, the Union Women and Child Development Minister, has strongly condemned a horrifying incident captured in a viral video from Manipur, which depicts the shameful act of a mob parading two women naked before subjecting them to gang rape. Expressing her outrage, Irani labelled the incident as “condemnable and downright inhuman.” She took immediate action and reached out to Manipur’s Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh.

In a tweet, Smriti Irani stated,”The horrific video of sexual assault of two women emanating from Manipur is condemnable and downright inhuman. Spoke to Chief Minister N Biren Singh ji, who has informed me that investigation is currently underway and assured that no effort will be spared to bring perpetrators to justice,” read the tweet from the Union Minister.

Chief Minister Biren Singh confirmed the conversation with Smriti Irani, and together with the Chief Secretary, assured her of prompt and decisive action against the criminals involved in this heinous crime.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) also took cognizance of the Manipur incident and condemned it strongly in a separate tweet. They urged the Director General of Police (DGP) in Manipur to take appropriate action promptly.

The video, which emerged a day earlier, shows the appalling act of the two women being paraded naked in Manipur’s Thoubal district by a group of men, sparking widespread outrage. A senior police official revealed that the incident occurred on May 4, and in response, a case of abduction, gang rape, and murder has been registered. The police have made their first arrest in connection with the incident, as per the statement of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
