New Delhi: Rajya Sabha Chairman and VP Jagdeep Dhankhar took the decision today to suspend Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh for the remainder of the monsoon session of Parliament. The suspension was due to Singh’s repeated violation of the Chair’s directives during the proceedings.
The incident occurred when the House took up the Question Hour amid protests by the Opposition, demanding a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Manipur violence and a detailed discussion on the issue. Sanjay Singh interrupted the proceedings and approached the Chairman’s podium, disregarding Dhankhar’s instruction to return to his seat. As a result, the Chairman named him for his disruptive behaviour.
The Leader of the House, Piyush Goyal, swiftly moved a motion urging the Chair to suspend Sanjay Singh, stating that such conduct was against the ethics and rules of the House. Goyal advocated for the AAP member’s suspension from the entire session of the House, which was approved by the House.
The suspension came after a prior caution from Dhankhar to Sanjay Singh, who had previously protested against a proposed bill concerning the Centre’s ordinance for control over services in Delhi. The AAP has been among the opposition parties demanding a statement from the Prime Minister and a detailed discussion on the situation in Manipur.
The proceedings of the Rajya Sabha were repeatedly disrupted by the Opposition parties’ demands related to ethnic violence in Manipur. They sought the suspension of business to facilitate a comprehensive discussion on the issue. The government expressed its willingness to discuss the situation, but the Opposition rejected its proposal for a short-duration discussion.
The monsoon session of Parliament, which began on July 20, is scheduled to continue until August 11. The suspension of Sanjay Singh for the rest of the session underscores the Chairman’s commitment to maintaining decorum and adherence to parliamentary rules during critical sessions.
