Chennai: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has made another arrest in connection with last year’s ISIS car bomb blast case in Coimbatore, in which the prime accused was murdered in a terror explosion sparked by a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (IED). The NIA apprehended Mohammed Idris (25), also known as Idris, a resident of Coimbatore, for his involvement in conspiring with other accused individuals to carry out the terror attack.

The incident which occurred near the Arulmigu Kottai Sangameshwarar Thirukovil temple at Eswaran Kovil Street, Ukkadam, in Coimbatore on October 23 of the previous year. The vehicle carrying the IED was driven by the deceased accused, Jamesha Mubeen, with whom Idris had a close association, according to the NIA.

The NIA disclosed that Idris was part of secret conspiracy meetings with Jamesha and other co-conspirators while planning the terror attack. The agency is scheduled to present Idris before the NIA special court in Chennai today. It is noteworthy that Idris had been summoned by the NIA for interrogation on Monday, and his arrest followed when he failed to comply with the summons on Tuesday night.

NIA investigations have uncovered that Jamesha was motivated by a hardcore ISIS ideology and carried out the terror attack after pledging allegiance to the self-proclaimed Caliph of the terrorist organization, Abu-Al-Hasan Al-Hashimi Al-Qurashi. Earlier this year, on April 20 and June 2, the NIA filed two separate chargesheets in the case, one against six accused and another against five accused, before the NIA Court at Poonamallee, Chennai.

Originally registered by the Ukkadam Police Station in Coimbatore City, the case was subsequently transferred to the NIA, which re-registered it on October 27 of the previous year. The NIA probe unveiled that Mubeen, along with other individuals, conspired to carry out a series of suicidal terror attacks in Coimbatore city as an act of revenge against non-believers. This intent was captured in a self-made confessional video made just prior to the planned attack. The conspiracy was orchestrated in the Sathyamangalam forest of Erode district in Tamil Nadu, where Umar Farooque was designated to lead the execution of the attack and assign roles to the other accused individuals.
