Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court has dismissed the appeal made by AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Sanjay Singh to stay the ongoing criminal defamation proceedings against them, filed by Gujarat University. The defamation case was in connection with their remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s degree qualifications.
Justice Samir Dave, while refusing the stay order for the defamation proceedings taking place in a metropolitan court against the two leaders, observed that both of them had earlier given an assurance to the sessions court that they will remain present before the metropolitan court to record their statement.
“You have to remain present…you are avoiding court appearance,” the judge said.
Previously, a metropolitan court had summoned Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal and Aam Aadmi Party’s Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh to appear on August 11 for the defamation case filed by Gujarat University over their “sarcastic” and “derogatory” statement in connection with PM Modi’s degree.
Subsequently, the AAP leaders lodged a revision plea in the sessions court, challenging the metropolitan court’s summons in connection with the defamation case. Howeve, the sessions court recently rejected their plea, prompting them to approach the Gujarat High Court.
