Mumbai: Tragedy struck at Kasara railway station in Maharashtra’s Thane district as a Railway Protection Force (RPF) soldier lost his life after being run over by a train in the early hours of Sunday, according to an official statement.

The deceased, identified as Head Constable Dileep Sonwane (53), was diligently performing his duty at Kasara station. Around 6:49 am, while the LTT-Kanpur Express arrived at the station, some passengers sought his assistance. Acting promptly, Sonwane helped a passenger, but as he was stepping off the train, it unexpectedly started moving. In the ensuing struggle to regain his balance, he slipped into the gap between the platform and the train. The train ran over the jawan, and he died on the spot, the official said.

Sonawane was a resident of Kalyan and is survived by his wife and two children, the official said, adding that a case of accidental death has been registered.
