Srinagar: On the occasion of the 77th Independence Day, the family of Irshad Ahmad, a Hizb-Ul-Mujahideen terrorist from Kashmir, celebrated by unfurling the national flag in their backyard. Led by Irshad Ahmad’s brother, Bashir Ahmad, and other family members, the Tricolor flag was raised at their residence in Doda, Kashmir.

Bashir Ahmad, speaking to the media, asserted his strong affiliation with India, expressing that he considers himself a Hindustani and views India as his homeland. He recounted the challenges the family had faced due to Irshad’s involvement with the terrorist organisation, leading to his mother’s mental distress. Despite their repeated pleas, Irshad did not heed their calls to surrender to the army and return to a normal life. Bashir reiterated their unwavering patriotism, stating that they are proud Indians ready to make any sacrifice for their country, even die for it.

Irshad Ahmad had joined the Hizbul Mujahideen in 1994 and subsequently crossed the Line of Control to reach Pakistan. He was officially designated as a terrorist by the government last year. According to sources, he currently resides in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Bashir publicly urged the government to facilitate Irshad’s return while also criticising his brother’s misguided ideology. He stressed their contentment and safety within India, advocating for collective efforts to strengthen the nation rather than undermine it. The family has consistently appealed to Irshad Ahmad to surrender to the armed forces and lead a normal life. Additionally, they called on the government to orchestrate his reunion with the rest of the family.
