Srinagar: In a groundbreaking initiative set to reshape the future of transportation in India, the country’s first hydrogen fuel cell buses are set to grace the roads, and they’ll commence their journey from the breathtaking heights of Leh, the city of Ladakh. This pioneering endeavour marks the introduction of hydrogen fuel cell buses on a commercial scale, and it’s notable for testing such cutting-edge technology at an altitude of 11,500 feet while navigating an oxygen-deficient atmosphere.

This trailblazing project is being spearheaded by India’s largest power producer, the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC). NTPC is poised to inaugurate five hydrogen buses in Leh, a significant step towards realising a sustainable and eco-friendly mode of transportation. The company’s commitment to green energy is underscored by its creation of a 1.7 MW station and solar plant designed to power these innovative buses and produce clean, green hydrogen. To accommodate this endeavour, the administration has secured 7.5 acres of land strategically located in the heart of the city.

Looking ahead, the Indian government has set ambitious plans to introduce 2.5 crore hydrogen buses across the nation, aligning with the Prime Minister’s vision of building a carbon-free India. Ladakh, nestled in the serene heights of the Himalayas, is on the cusp of achieving remarkable milestones in sustainable development. The region is not only safeguarding its unique ecological diversity but is also making substantial contributions to India’s broader mission of environmental preservation.

The government’s pledge to position Ladakh as a carbon-free region on the world map underscores its unwavering commitment to combat climate change and chart a path towards a sustainable future. This audacious endeavour signifies India’s resolute pursuit of a greener and cleaner transportation sector, setting the stage for a more environmentally conscious nation.
