New Delhi: Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar has been declared guilty by a Delhi court for his involvement in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The case pertains to the murder of Sikhs Sohan Singh and his son-in-law Avtar Singh in Delhi on November 1, 1984. The attackers not only took the lives of the two victims but also looted their homes and set them ablaze.
Sajjan Kumar was charged with eleven sections of the Indian Penal Code in connection with the case. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) conducted an inquiry in 2015, following which FIRs were registered in Janakpuri and Vikaspuri.
In a prior instance, the SIT had questioned the trial court’s decision to grant bail to Sajjan Kumar in another case linked to the Sikh massacre. At present, Sajjan Kumar is serving a life sentence. He was incarcerated in 2018 after being convicted by the Delhi High Court in a different case related to the riots.
The aftermath of the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984 saw an eruption of widespread violence targeting Sikhs across the nation. This tragic episode witnessed numerous casualties, instances of sexual assault, and the destruction of places of worship, residences, and businesses. The orchestrators of these attacks were predominantly Congress leaders. In the wake of these events, multiple Congress leaders were subsequently convicted for their role in the atrocities.
