The first phase of Gaganyaan, the country’s flagship mission to send humans into space, is scheduled to take place in October, as officially announced by Project Director R. Hutton. Currently, ISRO is training four astronauts for the mission. He mentioned that additional individuals will undergo training in preparation for future missions.
ISRO’s primary goal is to place four astronauts into orbit at an altitude of 400 kilometres above Earth. They will reach their destination using a spacecraft and remain in space for three days. Following this mission, the spacecraft will make its landing in the Indian Ocean. If the Gaganyaan project successfully sends humans into space, efforts will then commence to establish a permanent Indian presence in space.
ISRO is aiming for a wide range of missions, from space station endeavours to lunar journeys, with this project. A budget of 9,023 crore has been allocated for these ambitious endeavors. The inaugural Gaganyaan probe is anticipated to launch from Sriharikota in 2024. Before this mission, ISRO conducted experiments, including those involving parachute techniques relevant to spacecraft reentry.
