New Delhi: In a remarkable culmination to the 17-day-long ordeal, all 41 workers who were trapped in the collapsed Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi have been successfully rescued yesterday. The under-construction passage had become a dark and challenging environment for the workers since the incident occurred on November 12.
The rescue operation following the shocking incident, was one of the most difficult and dangerous one. Jubilant atmosphere prevailed outside the tunnel as the rat-hole miners, in coordination with the Army, managed to manually dig through 55 metres of debris horizontally. With just two metres left to reach the trapped workers, optimism grew among family members gathered outside the tunnel.
As the day progressed, the rescue teams intensified their efforts, and by 7 p.m. yesterday, they began moving inside the tunnel, with ambulances positioned nearby. At 7:30 p.m., the state government announced the successful evacuation of the first worker from the tunnel. In a little over an hour, the remaining 40 workers were safely brought out, marking the end of a challenging chapter and a collective sigh of relief for the families and the rescue teams involved.
