In a move to curb the misuse of social media platforms, the Jammu and Kashmir Police launched legal action against nine individuals accused of spreading rumors and hateful content. The initiative follows the issuance of guidelines by authorities aimed at preventing the dissemination of communally sensitive or terrorist and secessionist-promoting content on social media.
The legal proceedings have been initiated across various districts, including Anantnag, Pulwama, Budgam, Baramulla, Bandipora, and Ganderbal. Police officials reported that individuals in these districts are facing legal action for uploading abusive content and spreading misinformation on social media.
In Anantnag, three individuals—Salman Mushtaq Kuttay, Rameez Ashraf Hadi, and Umer Farooq Ganie alias Ghazi Sir—have been targeted for allegedly posting hateful videos containing inflammatory and seditious statements on social media platforms.
Meanwhile, Baramulla Police took action against Bilal Ahmad Wani, identified as a provocateur and rumor-monger from Wani Mohalla Baliharan Pattan. In Pulwama’s Awantipora area, legal action has been initiated against Sheeraz Ahmed Beigh for uploading inflammatory and instigating content on social media. Similarly, in Ganderbal, the police have taken legal action against two individuals accused of uploading and sharing hateful content on social media platforms.
These actions come in the wake of guidelines issued under CrPC Section 144 by Kashmir authorities, aiming to curb the spread of content that is communally sensitive or promotes terrorism and secessionism. These guidelines were disseminated by all district administrations over the lastt week.
