Chennai: A subsea pipeline connected to a fertilizer manufacturing unit in north Chennai experienced an ammonia gas leak, causing widespread illness among local residents and resulting in the hospitalization of about 25 people. Authorities reported symptoms such as shortness of breath, nausea, and faintness among those affected, who are currently undergoing medical treatment.

The incident occurred around 11:45 pm yesterday, releasing an odour that caused significant discomfort in the air across north Chennai areas. A number of individuals experienced a ‘burning sensation’ in their throat and chest, leading to fainting spells. Residents, startled from their sleep, rushed out of their homes, alerting neighbors and seeking refuge on main roads with uncertainty about the appropriate course of action.

For the people of north Chennai, this incident compounds the challenges they face, following a recent oil spill. About 25 individuals, including children residing in proximity to the fertilizer manufacturing facility, have been hospitalized, with most reporting feelings of unease, shortness of breath, nausea, and faintness.
