Chennai: Priya Ravichander (42), the first woman officer of the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Service (TNFRS), has been awarded the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) rank. The central government approved the Tamil Nadu government’s recommendation to elevate Priya to the IAS, marking a historic moment as she becomes the first fire service officer to attain this rank.

Priya joined the service in 2003 after clearing the Group-1 examination. She has also undergone specialised training from the United Kingdom. In 2012, Priya Ravichander faced severe injuries while leading a team in the firefighting efforts to control a blaze at a government building in Chepauk. The incident happened when the roof of the building collapsed as she tried to secure important government files.

In recognition of her exceptional service and bravery, Priya was honoured with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Police Medal for Excellence in the same year and the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry in 2013.
