New Delhi: The Indian Navy rescued 21 individuals, comprising 15 Bharatiyas, from the Liberian-flagged cargo ship MV Lila Norfolk, which had been hijacked by pirates. The Navy reported that the pirates had vacated the vessel before their intervention, and all those on board are safe.
The rescue operation, led by the Indian naval warship INS Chennai and the Marine Commando Force (MARCOs) of the Indian Navy, unfolded as a helicopter dispatched from INS Chennai warned the pirates to vacate the ship. The helicopter warned the pirates to leave the vessel. With this, the pirates abandoned the ship and escaped. Following this, Indian Navy personnel boarded the ship and successfully freed the individuals who were trapped.
The incident unfolded when the Navy received information on Friday (January 5) evening about a six-member armed group hijacking the MV Lila Norfolk cargo ship. In response, a surveillance aircraft from the Indian Navy conducted an assessment of the situation and initiated the mission to free the individuals held captive on the ship.
