New Delhi: More than 67 lakh individuals utilised the Delhi Metro on New Year day, marking a significant increase in passenger numbers. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) reported that this surge represents the highest number of passengers in six years. According to DMRC data released on Saturday, a total of 67.47 lakh passengers availed the metro services on January 1.

Comparatively, last year on January 1, the metro served 49.16 lakh passengers, 23.66 lakh in 2022, 55.26 lakh in 2020, and 50.16 lakh in 2019. The decline in passenger numbers was notably recorded on January 1, 2021, which marked the first New Year celebration post-Covid-19 lockdown, with 18.07 lakh passengers.

On December 31 of last year, 48.46 lakh people utilised the metro facility. In contrast, on December 31 in 2019, the ridership stood at 55.29 lakh. Noteworthy initiatives, such as the integration of DMRC’s ticketing service with the ‘One Delhi’ mobile application, have been introduced recently to enhance passenger convenience and provide better facilities.
