New Delhi: The Central government announced on Tuesday a reduction in import duty rates for components essential in the production of mobile phones, bringing it down to 10% from the previous 15%.
The revised import duty applies to a range of components, including the battery cover, front cover, middle cover, main lens, back cover, GSM Antenna, PU case/sealing gasket, and various articles made of polyurethane foam. This encompasses sealing gaskets/cases from PE, PP, EPS, PC, and other individual polymers or combinations thereof, SIM socket, screws, and other mechanical items made of plastic and metal.
The India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) has welcomed the move, asserting that the reduction in import duties on mobile phone components has the potential to boost domestic production by 28%, reaching an impressive USD 82 billion. This initiative is expected to spur exports and provide crucial support to the burgeoning field of indigenous manufacturing.
