New Delhi: Lincoln University College from Malaysia has initiated the process to establish a campus in Bharat, marking the first foreign university to apply through the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) application portal for this purpose.
The UGC has formed a five-member standing committee to evaluate the university’s application and is expected to provide its assessment soon. During a session in the Lok Sabha on Monday, Union Education Minister of State, Subhas Sarkar, confirmed that Lincoln University College has submitted an application to the UGC to establish a campus in Telangana.
Lincoln University College holds a notable position in global rankings, being ranked between 301st to 340th in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023, and placed in the 301st to 400th band in the Times Higher Education World Rankings.
This move follows the UGC’s recent notification of regulations allowing Foreign Higher Education Institutions (FHEIs) to establish and operate campuses in Bharat independently, granting them the authority to confer degrees and determine admission procedures and fee structures.
According to the UGC guidelines, collaboration among two or more foreign universities for setting up campuses in Bharat is permissible, provided each institution meets the eligibility criteria individually. Additionally, each foreign university can propose multiple campuses in Bharat, subject to separate applications for each location submitted to the UGC.
